Review: Plaza Mocha Desserts and Drinks

March 31, 2018 by Tina Lee Leave a Comment

As much as I love all the delectable dishes that Plaza Mocha serves, I often go there for the desserts. Back when Plaza Mocha wasn’t the bustling cafe that it is now, I’ve told my then-boyf that their cheesecakes are so much better than Starbucks’ and years later, I still feel the same!

Today I’ll be giving a short review on some of the desserts I’ve tried at Plaza Mocha. Their menu isn’t consistent so some desserts may no longer be available. I’ll be dividing the reviews into two parts, desserts and drinks… and by drinks, I mean smoothies and frappes.

Avocado Cheesecake

Avocado flavored desserts are my jam, I’m crazy about it. That’s why I was so ecstatic when Plaza Mocha came out with their avocado-based desserts! This seasonal cheesecake is good. I love the combination of caramel sauce and the smooth, creamy cheesecake. Love the avocado bits with every bite. Plaza Mocha never scrimps on the ingredients.

Unfortunately, I was able to sample the creampie first (review below) before the cheesecake version. I like the creampie better, to be honest. The avocado cheesecake’s flavor isn’t as pronounced.  Still, I would order this in a heartbeat just because I’m crezi for avocado.

Blueberry Grilled Sandwich

This is a sandwich made with three layers of toasted bread and a generous helping of blueberry jam and melty cheese. I feel guilty whenever I order this because I know how calorific this must be but lawrd, love the delectable combination! The mildness of the mozzarella cheese and the sweet-tart flavor of blueberries work so well together.

The bread slices were toasted perfectly so there is a satisfying crunch as you bite into the sandwich. The gooey cheese oozing from the sides, fantastic mouthfeel. This is one of my favorites!

Classic Cheesecake

Plaza Mocha’s classic New York Cheesecake is delightfully dense, smooth, and velvety. The strawberry sauce goes so well with the mild, milky flavor of the cheesecake and the slight tartness. This is my husband’s favorite flavor.

Guys, this is where it gets tricky, I don’t know the names of the cheesecake but I do know what they tasted like so bear with me.

Chocolate Yogurt Strawberry Cheesecake

This is more indulgent than your ordinary cheesecake, there’s a lot of things going on here. Strawberries and chocolate are a classic combination for a reason and this cake, it’s good albeit a little different from their usual offering.

But you know what, different is good. I like it when their pasty chef comes out with different desserts because I feel that she’s having fun with the flavors, you know? I love that the cheesecake base is not excessively sweet and the luxurious texture, terrific! The strawberry compote lends its own sweet-tart flavors into the mix.

Kiwi Cheesecake

This is one of Plaza Mocha’s rarer offerings and it certainly got us curious. Unlike the avocado cheesecake in which the avocado flavor barely registers, the kiwi cheesecake does taste like kiwi. This is my husband’s favorite!

It’s creamy, smooth, and it had loads of kiwi bits. I love kiwi the fruit so this cheesecake version is a real treat!

Blueberry Cheesecake

This is a classic cheesecake flavor and it’s honestly one of Plaza Mocha’s best-tasting cheesecake variants. It’s wholesome, familiar, sincere, and it hits the spot like nothing else. I love the generous smattering of blueberry preserves, which complements the umami flavor of the cream layer. Definitely worth a try!

Avocado Creampie

Without a doubt, the unicorn of all cheesecake flavors at Plaza Mocha, the avocado cream pie is so good. It’s hands down my favorite but dammit it, it never came back.

Now, some might say this is an ordinary cheesecake but the consistency is less dense, almost runny so personally, it doesn’t qualify as a cheesecake. You can see the tip of the cheesecake slice, it’s almost jelly-like.

I’ve always wanted to try Margarita Forés’ avocado cream pie, which she serves at her Grace Park resto. This could be the closest I’ll ever get to try Ms. Forés’ avocado cream pie.

Anyway, amazing flavors and texture. The cream base is smooth and soft but not soggy. The avocado flavor is robust, just the way I like it. There were bits of the fruit in the base too, which was a nice touch. I enjoyed this cake so much, I went back a few days later to order again but it’s been reincarnated as a cheesecake. And it didn’t taste the same. I was crestfallen! Bring this back dammit!

Chocolate Caramel Cake (?)

Dense, flavorful cake smothered with a generous layer of smoky caramel. It’s not as sweet as it looks, which I like. I hate cakes that are overly sweet, this one’s just right. The serving is quite massive too, perfect for sharing!

Black Forest Frappe (?)

Guys, I’m bad with names, you’re gonna have to bear with me! This is one of Plaza Mocha’s earliest cold drinks and it’s still my favorite. This could be the first drink I ordered when I dined at Plaza Mocha back when the cafe was but a wee baby!

As you can see, it’s a pretty sweet drink with all the trimmings, not recommended for diabetics, hehe. I love this drink because I love Black Forest anything! The generous swirl of whipped cream on top deserves a shoutout!

Matcha Green Tea Latte

I don’t really get the matcha craze to be honest. I tasted green tea KitKat and wasn’t really moved by it. That’s the reason why I didn’t order this drink until recently. It’s surprisingly good, it’s creamy, heartwarming, and delicious. It’s not bitter but the green tea flavor is robust. This is one of my husband’s favorite drinks and he orders this whenever he can’t have coffee!

I have drank a shit ton of hot and cold beverages at Plaza Mocha and I hate that I cannot remember them all! I will say, however, that the brewed coffee (classic Americano, I think), the Passion Fruit iced tea Piña colada iced tea, and latte are a must-try. The milkshakes are great too. In addition, any of Plaza Mocha’s deluxe sandwiches are so, so good but my fave (apart from the blueberry grilled sammich) is the one with bacon and eggs because bacon.

Review: BECCA x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Splits in Champagne Pop and Hyacinth

March 27, 2018 by Tina Lee Leave a Comment

I love how highlighters give the skin a mesmerizing sheen. I love it even more if the formula is dense powder! I have a love-hate relationship with cream formulations though I tend to avoid them at all cost!

It took me a while to write this review, no? Hahaha! This product is a part of Becca’s most successful collab with makeup guru Jaclyn Hill. It’s the BECCA x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Splits in Champagne Pop and Hyacinth. I got this product by mistake. For some reason, Sephora PH added this to my purchase although I wasn’t charged for it. I didn’t return it because that’s too taxing.

What is it: BECCA x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Splits in Champagne Pop and Hyacinth

The BECCA x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Splits in Champagne Pop and Hyacinth is a limited edition split pan highlighter and blusher in one. It features the brand’s iconic Champagne Pop highlighter shade and Hyacinth, a bright pink powder blush on.

Quality and Packaging

The packaging is so luxe, I gotta say. Becca always does a great job of presenting its many products so I understand the hype. BECCA x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Splits in Champagne Pop and Hyacinth is housed in a beautiful yet sturdy compact with pale gold and brushed metal accent.

The cardboard box is consistent with the compact’s design. It’s done in a metallic finish, which is really eye-catching.

Just for fun, here’s a comparison of the BECCA x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Splits in Champagne Pop and Hyacinth and the regular rose gold highlighter:

Opening up the compact and it reveals the split pans. Every time I open this compact I feel like all the angels in heaven are singing, hahaha!

Performance

Now for the product itself, as far as the formula goes, the BECCA x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Splits in Champagne Pop and Hyacinth is just as high in quality as the brand’s regular highlighters. The highlighter is dense and pigmented. It’s the kind of product that you should control carefully if you don’t want to look like a walking disco ball, hahaha!

I do love the champagne highlighter, it will flatter peeps with warm undertones! The shade is similar to theBalm’s Mary Lou-Manizer although the shade is deeper, more golden. The staying power of the highlighter is impressive too!

As for the blush, it’s so pigmented that a little goes a long, long way. Staying power is just as impressive, it stays put for hours. The blush-on shade is nice although it doesn’t appeal to me that much. I like the coral version of the Champagne Splits because the shade of the blush is more flattering. Still, this is a free product so I really can’t complain!

Swatch Party!

Final Thoughts

Overall, the  BECCA x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Splits in Champagne Pop and Hyacinth is a great product worth the price. Yes, I got this for free but the quality, staying power, and ultra-luxe packaging of the  BECCA x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Splits in Champagne Pop and Hyacinth won me over. I still prefer my rose gold highlighter but the highlighter shade is just as flattering. Highly recommended!

My Living Room: A Work in Progress

March 11, 2018 by Tina Lee Leave a Comment

Oh hey! I know I haven’t been writing anything worth reading recently because I’ve been feeling a wee bit burned out. That’s kinda rich because I’m working less hard nowadays, hahaha! I don’t know man, it’s probably because girlfriend’s getting old. I recently celebrated my birthday and if I’m being completely honest, I wasn’t into it at all. It must be the heat!

Anyway, I thought I’d do a little interior design post today. Haven’t done that in a while, which is a pity because surrounding myself with pretty things is what I’ve always been about.

Just so you know, I’ve been writing this kind of content for more than a year now and though I’m no expert, the job really influenced my taste too. After getting hitched, we moved to an old property, a house that hasn’t been lived in since it was constructed. Initially, I hated the move because I felt more at home in my old house but gradually, we made the new space our own.

I got into decorating our living room and kitchen last year. I did this gradually, just adding a couple of knickknacks here and there. So far, this is what our living room looks like:

It doesn’t look much but if you’ve seen how horrible the set up we had to make do with during the move, this is a welcome upgrade.

A few details: below is an antique narra cupboard that I inherited from my mom. I wanted to give this piece a fresh coat of paint (white) but my mom talked me out of it. I still hate the finish but maybe someday I will go ahead and have this repainted a different color. I use it to store my smaller bags as you can see.

I’ve recently added splashes of color and metallic accents to my decor. My interiors looked sterile and too matchy-matchy before and the metallic accents added character to the space. Can I just say, I love metallic accents! Especially gold and rose gold! Like, literally, the hubs chuckle whenever I see something bright and shiny. I’m so predictable.

I’m always searching for cool throw pillow covers and I love the furry frilly kind. The red one above, I had to travel to the city to get it. My local SM, as well as MegaMall’s department store, doesn’t carry fancy throw pillow covers like that! I got that one at Our Home for PhP 1,200+++ if I’m not mistaken. It’s pricey but so, so nice. The heart-shaped pillow is a Christmas gift from my nieces last year.

Another metallic piece that I got from Our Home is the fruit holder turned book organizer pictured above. I had plans of getting a mirrored serving tray during one of our outings but they were so pricey! Not giving up on that plan but this metallic fruit holder will do in the meantime. The gold bell is a souvenir we got while in Davao. I wish we bought more!

I got a couple of those metallic pineapples and pear wire decors at Megamall department store. I paired one with a silver placemat and a bronzy picture frame. This arrangement serves as my living room centerpiece.

The arrangement above is set on a side table. It’s a little too bare for my liking still but I’m still mixing and matching my decors at this point. I’m still learning about layering!

I also re-arranged my bookcases last week. They were set in a different part of the living room and now, they are side by side with the TV in between. I still like the old arrangement but I feel that this saves a lot of space. My living room is petite, btw, so anything that can help claim what little floor space I have left, I’d go for it. I freakin’ hate the wires tho. Still figuring out how to hide the cords without investing in a tall cabinet.

Here’s my husband’s domain, the kitchen. I love our kitchen because it’s one of the largest, homiest rooms in the house. We’re constantly adding new items in the kitchen now that our finances aren’t focused too much on getting larger pieces of furniture. I love how large the kitchen is compared to our old kitchen. We have plans for expanding the storage space even more so we can finally up our dinnerware game! SO excited.

Below is what my current entryway looks like. It’s not much so upgrades will be made this April. I’m planning on having a shoe closet made along with a cabinet/seating area thing going on. I will also add a couple of pieces so my cats have a spot to sleep during the afternoons by the window.

A yayamanin decorative mirror will also replace that picture hanging on the wall. I will also get rid of my old full-length mirror and get a leaning, oversized one in a sleek, minimalist design. Luckily, we know a woodworks shop near our home so we have several customized pieces in mind. I pulled lots of inspos online! It was such a fun project and I cannot wait to get this shit started because I need my home to look better.

After doing bits of work in the entryway, we will move on to my brother’s bedroom (which needs a total makeover) and the guestroom (which is bare!). Hay! So many things to think about! How’s your weekend going?

My Next Bag? Drooling Over These Beauties

March 1, 2018 by Tina Lee Leave a Comment

It’s March, which means it’s my birthday week 😀 If I’m being completely honest, I don’t feel like celebrating my birthday these days. This has been going on for like, four years now. I hate the summer season, which starts in March in the PH, and my birthday is sorta like a reminder of the hard months ahead. It’s petty I know but it’s been sweltering here in the tropics for some time now! Damn you, global warming!

Anyhoo, one of my recent acquisitions is a Fendi satchel (review here). I know it’s too early to think about what bag to get for next year’s birthday gift but it pays to plan ahead! I haven’t really decided what to get but I’m hoping for a smaller bag. Here are some of the bags I’ve been eyeing:

Prada Double Zip

I mentioned how I pined for this gorgeous bag. I love the crisp, classic lines, the luxurious design, and the commanding branding. I went to a local Prada boutique hoping to get a glimpse of the Nero in small but alas, it’s unavailable!

All colorways were not available except for the white one, which to be honest, is a nope for me. If I’m getting this bag, I have no choice but to get it at Prada Solaire or pre-order one from my personal shopper. Le ugh, I wanted to get this myself straight from the boutique, huhuhu!

Gucci Ophidia

At first, I wasn’t a fan of this bag because the branding goes against my now-minimalist sensibilities but I do love the stunning design of the bag itself. It’s such an easy breezy bag! I can see myself wearing this with a white shirt and a pair of blue denim. Ah so clean and sleek!

I also adore the vintage accents. I feel that I can hand this down to my grandkids and it’ll still be as stylish as the day I bought it. I have a strong feeling about this one. Unfortunately, this is also unavailable at my local Gucci. So fuck it, I have to order this online too.

Celine Box Bag

I’m not much of a Celine fan but I can appreciate the contemporary appeal of the Luggage bag (nano only!) and the sleek, vintage-y box bag. I’m usually into black bags but somehow, the design of the Celine box bag looks better in maroon or camel:

I suppose these colorways enhance the vintage-y design of the bag! This bag reminds me of an old school Cartier bag, I love it. No idea where to get this locally because we don’t have a Celine boutique in the PH. I bet this is a pricey piece too because Celine bags are hella expensive. I don’t even know why. Still, I would save up for it if I could find a trusted source.

Goyard Belvedere

This has been on my radar for a while now. Goyard isn’t as popular as Gucci or LV here in PH but it’s everywhere in Japan and Hong Kong! The Goyard tote, which looks like the Neverfull, is the brand’s most recognizable bag but the style isn’t doing anything for me.

I like the Belvedere more because it looks so understated and compact. I love satchels and I think this shoulder bag really captured the old-school elegance of the traditional English satchels. The only thing that’s making me reconsider this bag is the adjustable leather straps. Over time, the straps will wear out.

Gucci Marmont Matelassé 2.0 Top Handle Bag

Initially, I was drawn to the Marmont flap bag but I feel that the size is too small for the price. The Matelassé 2.0 top handle bag offers more room without the added cost.

I like the functional style too! It has all the iconic features of the flap bag minus the ripped off Chanel flap bag design. I’m unsure how durable the smooth leather is but it’s quilted so hopefully, the material won’t attract scuffs and scratches.

Celine Luggage Tote in Nano

Initially, I wasn’t fond of the Luggage’s design but I’m seeing the nano more and more, it’s starting to grow on me! Unlike the Celine box bag, the Luggage nano can be sourced easily. I just need to find a trusted seller.

The only thing that’s making me reconsider this bag is the atrocious price. What’s up with Celine and their expensive bags? I guess the leather’s that good? I want the nano in black pebbled leather or perhaps, in dreamy midnight blue!
