Summer Makeup El Nino Style

April 23, 2015 by Tina Lee Leave a Comment

Summer’s in full swing here in the tropics. And it’s especially scorching this year with El Nino and all FML. Time and again, I have expressed my disdain for sunny weather. I like sunny weather don’t get me wrong. But if it’s 39 degrees and it’s humid as fuck, everything’s sticky and I just can’t stand it.

And so, one has to adjust his/her makeup routine. How do you wear makeup and not get all cakey in this heat? It’s tricky, I know. For me, it’s summer time when I ditch all kinds of liquid products except for sunblock and primer. I want to keep the layers in bare minimum because the last thing I want is to accidentally touch my face and feel the stickiness. Ew, no.

I busted out two things from MAC, my Studio Fix foundation powder and the Blot powder. I’m usually an NC30, but I have a tan right now so NC35 is what I use. For the Blot powder, I’m a medium. These products are my go-to in hot, humid climate. As long as you don’t overapply, your makeup won’t be cakey.

I start with a clean face and spread a generous layer of sunblock. Usually, my skin isn’t dry during the summer so I don’t use any moisturizer. If I did my foundie will slip and slide. My sunblock is hydrating enough but if you have dry skin you have to prep the skin properly.

I wait for a couple of minutes for the sunblock to dry down then dot the primer. I use a primer sparingly. I just apply the product on areas where I have large pores, which is basically the entire inner face, hahaha! After primer, I start concealing. Now, my usual routine is foundation before concealer but since I’m using a powder foundation, I feel that my concealer works better when applied before it.

After concealing all the brown spots, freckles or pimple scars, I get a buffing brush,Ā then work the powder foundation. I do so in thin layers because 1) I don’t want to mess my concealer and 2) don’t want to overdo it and look cakey.

Once I’m done with the foundation, the face is spot free but somewhat flat. So with a bronzer, I bring color back to the cheekbones and hairline. I also apply bronzer on the jawline to slim down my face. Yes, I contour my face every day. It’s an essential step for me, hahaha!

After the base is done, I start the usual routine: brows, eyes, cheeks, lips – in that order.

I usually wear light eye makeup in neutral tones, but I’m feeling this look šŸ™‚ It photographs really well! I contoured my eyes with a cool-towned brown, patted bronze eyeshadow all over the lids and lower lids. Then, finished up with a deep aubergine powder liner. Everything from Smashbox!

Cool Find: Air-O-Matic by Airoma

April 19, 2015 by Tina Lee 4 Comments

Note: Not a sponsored post I received a really cool gift from the boyf, an Air-o-matic by Airoma. It’s basically an air purifier, humidifier and aroma diffuser in one. Despite getting frequent migraines, I’m a massive aromatherapy fan. Photo 4-16-15, 8 09 48 PM Back when I was but a poor student, I poured most of my monies buying essential oils by The Body Shop. In fact, I collected almost all of their scents back in the day. I still have my collection even now! My favorite will always be the Moonflower. TBS discontinued both the essential oil and cologne, but I still have two bottles of the former.

I can’t count how many essential oil burners I had over the years! The problem with oil burners is you need tea candles to make them work. So it’s definitely a fire hazard. You can’t *really* relax when using an oil burner.

Also, you have to keep adding water or oil whenever the scent fades. So it was a pretty expensive habit that I never really outgrew. So knowing this, my boyfriend got me the bestest gift ever.

TheĀ Air-o-matic is better than any oil burner because there’s no heat and you don’t have to keep adding the essential oil. It uses water to disperse the scent and you can adjust how much oil you want to use each time. I got mine atĀ an Airoma kiosk in Megamall. Photo 4-16-15, 8 10 02 PM The air-o-matic comes in different colors. I wanted to get the black one, but it was out of stock. Got the dark green instead. They also offer different scents. Since I am hopelessly allergic to my cat, I decided to get the Eucalyptus one.

Unfortunately, the sales rep misheard me and got me the BreathEasy essential oil instead. This one is a combination of Peppermint and Eucalyptus. It’s a good thing BreathEasy is specifically made for those with asthma and allergy so I’m okay with it. Photo 4-16-15, 8 11 33 PM The unit also comes with one free essential oil and for that I got Lavender Garden. Operating the unit is easy. You just fill it with the right volume of water, add the desired amount of essential oil and switch it on. The unit will disperse the scent for a good 30 minutes to an hour. Photo 4-16-15, 8 10 23 PM Because PH is in the middle of summer (El Nino, no less), I’m getting frequent allergy attacks thanks to my ever dependable cat. When the air is wetter, airborneĀ irritants like dander or pollen are reduced. I can feel that the air-o-matic minimized the sniffles and helped me uh…decongest? Hahaha!

One thing that I noticed is that Lavender Garden’s scent lasts longer than BreathEasy. I will get another bottle sometime next week. I wanna get the Peppermint and Eucalyptus!Ā I’m hoping Eucalyptus’ scent will last longer than BreathEasy. I’m getting all the mentholated scents because I can be quite sensitive to sweetish scents. I can only tolerate powdery or minty scents. Photo 4-16-15, 8 13 44 PM The small bottle costs PhP700 while the bigger ones cost PhP1,200. I got the bigger bottle and have no plans of getting the smaller bottles in the future because I feel the bigger bottles are more economical.

Overall, this is a great buy especially for gals like me who love coming home to a fabulously scented room. You know, when you step inside a spa and you get slapped with a heady scent of eucalyptus? If you love that sort of thing, give this one a try. One unit can improve the air quality of a 66-square meter room, the sales rep said šŸ™‚

Review: Purederm Argan Makeup Remover Wipes

April 16, 2015 by Tina Lee 1 Comment

Oh hai! I’m still recovering from the long weekend! Now I’m back here in my little desk working these fingers to the bone. I’m giving a short review of a new-ish product I got from Watson’s, the Purederm Argan Makeup Remover Wipes. These come in two variants: Argan and Collagen. I tried both and liked this one better. I am on my third pack.

Photo 4-16-15, 12 08 32 PM

Before the wipes, I used Bifesta Micellar Water and Nivea Makeup remover wipes. Between the two, I like the Bifesta makeup remover. But I was lazy using that for so long I was ready to try other products.

I used Nivea makeup remover and was on my second pack when I decided not to repurchase anymore. The wipes were so freakin’ dry. The first time I thought I got a dud. The second time I bought it, the wipes are still dry so after finishing that off, never getting another again.

Purederm Argan makeup remover wipes contain more wipes than Nivea’s (30 wipes, Nivea only had 28). The wipes are also well-saturated by the makeup remover. The package is well-made and didn’t dry out the product either (it’s resealable, you see).

Photo 4-16-15, 12 08 21 PM

As far as performance go, I thought it did an OK job. Bifesta is still better but I say, it’s still a better choice than Nivea’s. I had no problems with the formulation especially now that I am using a new sunblock that’s far easier to remove than my old one. My face felt clean after a good wipe down. But like a proper Asian, I double cleanse to make sure there’s no residue. I love pairing this with Snoe’s foaming cleansing oil. You know I love that shit.

There is a limited number of brands that offer makeup removers in wipes. I dunno, maybe not a lot of gals are as lazy as me, hahahaa! I actually like makeup remover wipes now.
