What Came In The Mail: Clarisonic 4 Pack Brush Heads & Anastasia Beverly Hills Dip Brow Pomade

March 30, 2014 by Tina Lee Leave a Comment

A month ago, I pre-ordered two of, what I think, are personal grooming essentials I need for my stash. First, because Clarisonic and its many, many accessories are not available locally, I had to buy the brush heads in bulk. Thankfully, Clarisonic offers 4 brush heads in one pack. The 4-1 brush pack used to be offered for a limited time only but just recently, Clarisonic announced that it will be a part of their main product line. Good call.

As you know, Clarisonic is one of the main part of my nighttime skin regimen and it’s a must for me to brush my face so the products can seep through much easier. Clarisonic, coupled with better skin care products, totally changed the texture of my skin. I swear by it! So despite balking at the PhP4,000+ price tag, I went ahead and got me said brush heads. I got them from Gracey’s America and I chose the SENSITIVE type brush head as I was not keen on straying from stuff that works well on my skin.

I heard horror stories over Clarisonic’s other brush heads, specifically, Wayne Goss’ experience after shifting brush heads from sensitive to deep pore cleansing brush head:

So yeah. Not going there. The good news is, I can rest easy knowing I have brush heads that’ll last me all year! Another thing I got was the Anastasia BH dip brow pomade in Ebony. Incidentally, I lost my newly purchased MUFE Aqua Brow and despite its lackluster performance, I sorta felt bad about that simply because it’s a bit more expensive than the Anastasia one. I hate wasting money and I barely even got to about 1/4 the tube! It’s practically brand new but c’est la vie.

Now that my parcel has arrived, I cannot wait to road test the eyebrow pomade! I heard so many good things about Anastasia Dip Brow Pomade and I want to see for myself if this is indeed something that will end my hunt for the perfect brow primper.

Google Invites Geneticists to Upload DNA to The Cloud

March 27, 2014 by Tina Lee-Almazar | Tinaciouslee Leave a Comment

Google is never short of surprises. After rocking the industry by announcing a massive price cut on their cloud-based storage system, The Drive just days before, Google is at it again, inviting a team of geneticists to upload information into the Mountain View Search giant’s cloud infrastructure. Google has provided the scientists a walk through on how they can import, process, store and search for DNA information, a move that may pave way to discovering cures for various diseases.

gene 1

According to a report by MarketsnadMarkets, global genomics currently markets at a jaw-dropping $11 billion in 2013 and value is predicted to jump up to $19 billion by 2018. The wellbeing care and cloud-computing marketplace is also predicted to grow within just a few short years, and this may have swayed Google into getting a piece of the action.

Taking Human DNA TO The Cloud

In order to properly analyze genomes, explore deadly mutations and discover pathways towards developing life-saving drugs to incurable diseases, scientists will require storage. And LOTS of it. One individual’s genome could add up to 100 gigabyte of data and sequencing the human genome requires rigorous analysis.

However, issues regarding access to data analysis information and privacy protection have become cause for public concern. To address the issues, Google has teamed up with the Global Alliance For Genomics and Health, a group of health care providers, life science firms, universities and others. Members of the Global Alliance For Genomics and Health has met up for the first this month to encourage the industry to unify resources and develop standards on how to manage the data.

Global Alliance For Genomics and Health is working to govern ethics, data storage, privacy and security by developing common policies related to using genomics data stored from the cloud servers. To assure the public uproar over privacy issues, Google reps went on record to say that genomic data stored on their cloud is safe and secure.

Unprecedented Move To Health Care and Wellness

Google’s surprising move to genomics signals the search engine giant’s growing interest into health care and medical research. According to UCLA adjunct professor, George Geis, “this whole area, by the way of genome analysis, is really in general a hot area. Geis adds, that Google’s foray in genomics “could very well transform Google into another type of company – it partners with a pharmaceutical company or licenses its discoveries and patents its discoveries”

For now, Google is offering the genetics community 100% free access to its web services. However, this may not be the case in the future as Google is facing tough competition in the genomics-analysis industry, the biggest being, Amazon.com.

The Future of Genomics

While industry experts agree that cloud-based storage is still in infancy, Google’s involvement in the genomics analysis market may be the start of medical research and wellness reaching to a broader audience and with that comes even bigger profits for Google, a company that has already made significant funding in health care for the past year.

Raising A Teen Daughter As A Single Father

March 27, 2014 by Tina Lee-Almazar | Tinaciouslee Leave a Comment

Raising children as a single parent is definitely not a picnic but raising a teen daughter as a single father is certainly challenging. This is because as a daughter hits puberty, her body goes through all sort of changes and she needs someone to relate to, someone who can guide her through these changes and assure her that everything will be okay. As a father to two teenage daughters, I may not be able to relate much about the changes their bodies are going through but I try to be there and offer my support as long as they need it.

Raising a teen daughter will require Herculean patience but it’s well worth it. Setting responsibility limits as well as showing her that she is loved are two important things to remember when dealing with teenagers. As long as you become a contributing, rather than a controlling figure in her life, things will be okay. If you play an active part in your teen daughter’s life, and have long established a supportive, honest and loving father-daughter relationship with your child then you have very little to worry about especially during the dreaded “rebellious teen” phase.

While there’s no sure-fire ways to deal with challenges that comes with raising a teen daughter, I am listing down several tips that will help you raise your daughter as a single father:

Give Her Room To Breathe

Just like men, women need breathing room for themselves. Your daughter will need her own “me time” especially if she is going through different physical, mental and emotional changes as most teens do. But remember, as much as your daughter needs her mother during this crucial moment in her life, she will also need her father.

Get Expert Advice on Women: Talk To Other Women

If you find yourself dumbfounded dealing with your daughter’s queer mood swings, it’s time to call in the experts, talk to other women. Start with female family members like a sister, an aunt, grandmother and even a close female friend. Don’t be afraid to ask questions in order to understand your teen daughter’s behavior. Go out there and get as much information as you can so the next time your daughter going through something, you know exactly what to do and how to deal with it.

Value Her Privacy

If you are confident that you have raised a loving and responsible teen daughter then there’s absolutely no reason to worry about what she does outside the parameters of your home. So refrain from sneaking into her room and going through her things. Your teen daughter is at a point in her life where she wants to be treated like an adult. Trust your child to know right from wrong and believe in your own ability as a parent.

Discussing Dating, Sex and Relationships

This might be the one of the most dreaded stage of any parent regardless of your offspring’s age and it’s so easy to mess it up too. When it comes to dating, it’s important to establish ground rules from the start so there’s no confusion later on. It’s equally important to give your honest stand on dating, alcohol drinking and boys. This way, when she does start to like someone or is having problems in these areas, she’ll know the first person to get advice from.

Dealing With Angsty Teens

March 27, 2014 by Tina Lee-Almazar | Tinaciouslee Leave a Comment

Just when you thought you knew your child, puberty hits and it feels like the once rambunctious ball of energy that gave you so much joy turned into a completely different person. One that dresses like an old man, resents authority with a passion and have a devil-may-care-attitude to match.

They grow up so fast, don’t they?

Suddenly, it feels you are living with a moody stranger in your own home. Every conversation drifts into a shouting match. You are bombarded with questions you are not entirely comfortable answering. From the bubbly boy who comes rushing to you after school, he now spends the most part of the night locked up in his room.

Relax, it’s just hormones. He is at the point of his life when he needs answers, where he needs to feel in order to learn, to experience the world and discover the possibilities.

Of course, raising a teen is not without its challenges. If anything, even getting your teen to talk to you will require more effort. Dealing with a clammed-up teen is not as impossible as it looks. We’ve listed down great ways to re-establish connection or stay connected with your teen:

Communication is Key

There’s no easy way to establish communication between a parent and a resentful teen but it’s important to never give up. Listen to his feelings without judgment and don’t shut them out completely when your opinions differ from theirs. No blame game, no I-Told-You-So, even when the point of the issue is staring you in the face.

Start by letting your teen vent out his feelings without letting out snide remarks on the side. Interrupting might only lead to him withdrawing away from you or worse, it could turn casual conversations into a fight. Respond to your teen in a non-judgmental way and try to put yourself in his shoes. This will encourage him to talk to you more when he is going through personal or emotional conflicts.

Changing Moods, Changing Tastes

As kids grow, moods change and taste in clothes, food, etc. change along with it. One of the main causes of friction between teens and parents is most parents cannot cope with these changes. They tend to stick to what they knew about their offspring as a child rather than get to know the blossoming adults that they are now. You cannot expect your teen to share the same taste in music nor have the same views about the world as you. He is different from you because he’s not your clone. It’s important to at least recognize different perspective towards things and just give your teen enough freedom to let him express himself otherwise, he might go looking for acceptance in all the wrong places.

It All Boils Down To Acceptance

Teenage years are perhaps one of the hardest periods to deal with as parents. The differences in opinions create friction and this often leads to massive rows.

It might be difficult to accept, you might not be able to wrap your head around the idea completely but it’s time to come to terms to the fact that your little one is all grown up. This means the baby you held in your arm in the delivery room has now evolved into the sulking heap of angst in the living room.

As the adult, you need to accept that your teen needs a certain level of independence in order to thrive. At some point in their lives, they’ll move out of your home and they will live the life they see fit. The transition would be much easier if you start preparing your teen to live life independently, one step at a time.

Review: Smashbox Full Exposure Palette

March 19, 2014 by Tina Lee 2 Comments

Lawrd, I never had to work this hard for shimmers to show up on my peepers until the Smashbox Full Exposure palette came along. Fair warning, this palette is not for newbies (like myself). I did read reviews about how problematic the shimmers were but paid no attention because one look at the row of mattes and I’m smitten! full I know they say shimmery eyeshadows make one’s fine lines stand out but I don’t care, I love me some shimmerz! The fact is, all shimmers with the the exception of S4 (shimmer4) are very dry, do not adhere well on the skin and the fallout is a nightmare! I literally end up looking like I tripped facedown on a mound of glitter. The glitter are weirdly chunky and you need to “stab” the surface to get a decent pass on the skin. The pigment of the shimmers do not translate well on the skin either and I tried four different ways to apply the shimmers. Yeah, I was that committed to make this work!

20140319-210700.jpg

On bare skin, forget it. It will only cause a sparkly mess on the face. Again, the shadows do not adhere well on the skin so glitters go everywhere except the eyes! With a primer, it looks okay but your skin will literally feel sore from all the patting. With a cream shadow base, color looks better with lesser fallout. Applied with a damp brush and you get decent results. Therefore, the last technique works the best. I was quite taken aback at how hard I had to work for the shimmers since I have the Smashbox Pop Studio Ultimate palette from the other year and it’s full of shimmers. The formula was superb, some colors even comparable to that of Urban Decay as far as quality goes. So despite the mixed reviews, I have, from experience, loved their formula and felt that maybe, just maybe, the critics were wrong!

20140319-210651.jpg

Yeah, that’s the last time I’ll go against the critics, hahaha! I’ll stick with UD shimmers from now on. As for the mattes, they are lovely! Not UD level lovely but close. Each one of the mattes applied with ease, they are very soft and not powdery at all.

I bought the palette because not a lot of makeup brands come up with palettes with more mattes included and with the exception of Lorac Pro and Laura Mercier’s Artist Palette, this is one of the few that actually offers fabulous matte shades that work as transitional colors.

Do I regret buying this palette? A slight tinge of regret yes. If it wasn’t for the quality of the mattes and the fantastic full-sizedduo- brush that came with it, I would’ve thought twice about getting this palette.

Review: Snoe Emutox

March 14, 2014 by Tina Lee 2 Comments

I was looking for a great facial mist the other day and came across a great one from Snoe (more one that in the future). Y’all know how impressed I was with Snoe’s It’s Oat-k, It’s Alright Foaming Cleansing Oil and since I have great experience with the brand, I didn’t think twice about picking out another skin care item from them. One of which is their longtime bestselling product, the Emu.Tox serum. It’s a gel type serum/moisturizer fortified with Australian Emu Oil and Acai berry.

emutox

I didn’t bother doing a patch test because that’s how I roll. It’s pretty affordable at PhP500+ I think but I’m a bit frustrated because Snoe seems to keep hiking up the prices in such a short period of time. I remember when they were selling really affordable makeup skin care a couple of years ago but now, most of their stuff are PhP300+ and up! That said, this is skin care and I understand why the price points are much higher.

Anyway, I gave this a try because I was looking for something to nourish my skin even more. Ever since I started smoothing over argan oil on my face, my skin has been on its best behavior. I swear, my skin is so smooth and plump, it felt really alien to me! So now I’m looking to boost up the moisture even further by augmenting my current skin regiment with a face serum. Since Snoe had a great track record, I told myself their Emu.Tox serum seems like a great choice for my skin.

I got the It’s Oat-K Facial mist and the Emu.Tox and used them simultaneously and big mistake! I broke out like crazy. Like, a day after (I began using both for four days) I first used it, I got little pimply things growing on the inner of my cheeks and my chin. I ignored it thinking I might be PMS-ing (I was in denial because I know I wasn’t PMS-ing) but it wasn’t the case because after four days of dealing with the small pimples on my face, I stopped using BOTH the Emu.Tox and the It’s Oat-K Hydrating Facial mist and went back to my trusty Clinique DDM and the Oil fo Argan Argan oil. I made sure to slather argan oil on my face twice daily too for faster healing. Two days later, my skin calmed down and though the weird red marks are still visible on my face, they flattened out completely.

20140314-110334.jpg

And because a picture says a thousand words, check out my mug above. It’s not obvious but my skin was hella calmer by the time I took a picture. Yes, my skin look oily because I just smooth over argan oil to hasten the healing process. As you can see, there’s still redness and the marks are still pretty obvious but they are also flattened out and looked like they’re about to go away soon (hopefully).

facialmist

It was a complete letdown because now, I don’t know which product irritated my skin. I’m thinking of waiting it out for a couple of days until my skin recovers completely and will test each one on their own. This way, I will track down which product caused me to break out. I’m a bit disappointed since the Emu.Tox felt so refreshing against my skin. It goes on light, has a slight cooling effect and sinks to the skin in seconds. It makes a great primer too!

It does have a strange fruity-milky smell that I don’t like. The scent isn’t overpowering and it’s a lot different from the pleasant fruity-milk smell I associate with the It’s Oat-K Cleansing Oil, which I’m a fan of.
